Lynn Peterson - Gilbert, Iowa Education Foundation

Lynn Peterson

Lynn Peterson and her husband Kevin live on a farm two miles north of Gilbert. Kevin’s family has been involved in Gilbert Schools for four generations. Lynn began teaching in Gilbert in 1979 after teaching five years in the Dallas, Texas area. After 36 years in education, Lynn retired in June of 2010. Kevin farms the family farm and is a recently retired lieutenant on the Ames Fire Department.

Mrs. P., as her students call her, graduated from the University of North Texas, received her Master’s Degree in Special Education at Iowa State University, and earned thirty post masters hours from Drake University. She taught every grade from kindergarten through fourth during her career. She taught special needs students at Gilbert for five years and was a special education consultant for Heartland AEA for two years before returning to Gilbert Elementary to continue her love of teaching.

Kevin and Lynn have two children who enjoyed the opportunity to attend Gilbert Schools.  Lindsay and her son Diggory live in Alexandria, Virginia where she has worked as a private contractor and collections manager for historical homes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.  Their son Erik lives in Ames and is a firefighter and EMT for the Ames Fire Department.  Erik also farms with Kevin and Lynn on the family farm two miles north of Gilbert.  Erik served four years in the United States Marine Corps and had two tours of duty in Iraq.

Lynn enjoys substitute teaching, gardening, traveling, visiting family, and time to read that stack of books she’s had on hold for years. She is a member of Gilbert Lutheran Church, Synod Anti Hunger Working Group, Backpack Buddy Friends of Gilbert, and is involved in the “Bears, Books, and Blankets” effort at Jacquelyn’s Photography to support women and children in the Ames area. Lynn appreciates the support of the community for the Gilbert Education Foundation.
